Where is Your Treasure?

Matthew 13:44-52

Hello, boys and girls. Our Bible verse from today’s lesson is Mt. 13:44, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”

Years ago people used to bury their treasures so no one could find them. We don’t bury our treasures today, but I made a treasure chest and put some items inside that are precious to me. Let’s look inside.  What’s this? Take out the items one at a time. Here’s a picture of my family. They are very special to me.

Here’s a rock that reminds me of our family vacations at Black River Lodge. Here’s my Bible. The Bible is God’s Word. It is very precious to me. I also have some jewelry inside.

What would you put inside your treasure chest? Accept answers. Suggest ideas if they don’t have any.

Here’s a plastic easter egg. Let’s see what’s inside the egg. A nail. Why would I have a nail in an egg? Accept answers. Yes, that’s right. It reminds me that Jesus, my Savior, suffered and died for my sins. He suffered and died for your sins, too. Why would an Easter egg be a treasure? Yes, it reminds me of Easter and that Jesus didn’t stay dead. He arose from the dead. He was resurrected!

These are some of my treasures. Now my treasure chest is empty. See. Hold up the empty chest. There is still one treasure I cannot put into this chest. I’ll give you a hint. Remember our Bible verse. In Matthew 13:44, the Bible says, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it he sold all that he had and bought that field.”

What special treasures do I have that I can’t put inside this box? Can you see faith? No, but my faith in Christ is precious to me. Through faith I know that Jesus died for our sins on the cross and we have forgiveness, eternal life and an abundant life here on earth. You have faith, too! Let’s thank God for the most precious gift of all.

Prayer: Lord, you are precious to me. Thank you for being my Savior. Thank you for granting me faith in you. Help me live for you. In Jesus name. Amen.

The above devotion is one of my children’s devotions written for Concordia Pulpit Resources and produced by Concordia Publishing House.  Why not use this devotion with your children or grandchildren?

Pretzels

Make Pretzels During Lent

Make pretzels to give away to friends and family during Lent. Let those you give them to know that you are praying for them…and then don’t forget to do so! Did you know that making pretzels is a Lenten tradition? Pretzels are shaped like arms folded in prayer, and can remind us to pray to God for our needs and the needs of others.

Use the following recipe to make pretzels (note: the recipe lists the amount of ingredients per person):

Have each person sprinkle ½ teaspoon of yeast into 3 tablespoons of warm water.

Stir to dissolve. Add ½ teaspoon of sugar, ½ cup flour, and 2 teaspoons of grated cheese.

Stir, then knead until smooth. Cut the dough into 4 pieces and roll into a snake shape. Shape the 4 pieces like pretzels, then brush them with a beaten egg. Sprinkle with coarse ground salt. Bake on a baking sheet at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes.
